When you think of the word ‘city’ what comes to mind? For some, the idea of a city embodies urbanization, industrialization, commerce, and even home; yet, what about history? This website is designed to shed light on the invention and the creation of the city of Toronto. Moreover, when looking specifically at the creation and implementation of the city’s subway system, one begins to realize that a city is composed of much more than concrete buildings and lights. In keeping with the theme of “Inventing Canada”, the history of the Toronto Subway System will be analyzed to demonstrate that, with its help, the city of Toronto and Canada became a metropolitan place. In this metropolitan city, the Toronto Subway System gave way for discussions regarding certain issues (economy, social class, gender, waged labour) that were felt on local, national and subsequently, international levels. This website presents the idea that the Toronto Subway System does more than just transport daily commuters; with the help of both primary and secondary sources it will be revealed that a subway system does indeed effect more than just travel.
